Ethiopian Airlines Adds a New Route to Atlanta – Fly non-stop from Atlanta to Addis Ababa
Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier, has announced a new route from Addis Ababa to Atlanta, making it the sixth airport in the US and Canada to be served by the airline on a passenger basis. The new service will take off on May 16th, 2023 and will be operated using Ethiopian’s 315-seat Boeing 787-9 aircraft, with 4 flights a week.
Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, known as the world’s busiest airport, will be the fourth African destination for the airline, joining Chicago O’Hare, JFK, Newark, Toronto, and Washington Dulles in having Ethiopian Airlines passenger flights.
The new route to Atlanta is significant for Ethiopian Airlines as it is a destination with a large Ethiopian diaspora and has around 15,000 roundtrip passengers traveling between the two cities. This makes Atlanta the fourth-largest African market for the airline. The airline plans to supplement this demand by also catering to passengers bound to/from Eastern Africa and Southern Africa.
However, the flights from Addis Ababa to Atlanta will not be non-stop due to the high elevation of Addis Ababa, which impacts aircraft performance and range. Instead, the flights will refuel in Dublin before continuing on to Atlanta. This is the same setup as most of Ethiopian’s other US and Canada routes. Although this will be a two-stop outbound service, Ethiopian Airlines plans to compete on price and by offering destinations that other airlines do not.
In total, Ethiopian Airlines now serves six destinations in the US and Canada, namely Chicago O’Hare, JFK, Newark, Toronto, Washington Dulles, and Atlanta. This expansion in the US market is a testament to the airline’s commitment to connecting Africa to the world and providing passengers with more travel options. With the addition of Atlanta, Ethiopian Airlines continues to expand its global network and provide its customers with the convenience of more destinations and better connections to the rest of the world.
